This month we’re very excited to spotlight one of our current providers, Windstream Wholesale.
Windstream Wholesale is an industry leader in advanced optical technology, offering fast, flexible, and customized wavelength and dark fiber solutions to carriers, content providers, and hyperscalers in the U.S. and Canada. Their cutting-edge Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON) spans over 170,000 route miles of fiber and 3,700 PoPs, serving close to 1000 cities nationwide.
In addition to providing connectivity, Windstream Wholesale is also positioned as an infrastructure frontrunner and construction company. They have recently constructed two dark fiber builds, with another under construction. Most impressive of their completed builds is the Beach Route, spanning 690 miles across a unique path along the East Coast. The Beach Route offers low latency, connects the Jacksonville cable landing station (CLS) to the Myrtle Beach CLS, and travels north to Raleigh. This route is ideal for cloud services and content delivery providers linking Raleigh and the Research Triangle region of North Carolina to aerospace hubs in Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC while providing access to subsea cables at the two major CLS sites along the route.
The Beach Route enables diverse connectivity options, granting access to over 12 data centers and 14 government and military locations. Additionally, it offers extensive broadband expansion opportunities through partnerships with municipalities, utilities, and cooperatives. The northern section of the Beach Route unlocks expansive dark fiber connectivity options across major East Coast cities, connecting Raleigh, North Carolina, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and from Myrtle Beach to Savannah, Georgia. Furthermore, it provides access to various sub-sea cables through the new DC BLOX cable landing station in Myrtle Beach, such as the Firmina, Nuveum, and Anjana sub-sea cables.
In response to customer capacity and diversity demands, the team recently increased the dark fiber miles offered from the Beach Route by establishing the Beach Route Dark Fiber Alliance. This partnership with Mid-Atlantic Broadband and Tilson Infrastructure extends the northern portion of Windstream Wholesale dark fiber to Richmond and connects to Ashburn, Virginia via SummitIG, adding 315 route miles. In addition, the Alliance with South Reach Networks extends the southern Beach Route portion by 360 miles from Jacksonville to Miami, Florida. The southern expansion passes through key locations in South Florida and enhances connectivity options for international data traffic, leveraging Miami’s strategic position as a major gateway for communication between North America, Latin America, and Europe. The high-performing 100% underground fiber optic network provides customers with a seamless, high-performing end-to-end solution. The combined 1,400-mile fiber network alliance not only facilitates easier connections for customers, but Windstream Wholesale also handles all aspects of the network transaction providing a seamless networking experience and eliminating the complexities of multi-vendor route solutions.
Although the Beach Route and its Alliance extensions are dark fiber concentrated the team has already enabled lit services across the Windstream Wholesale portion of the Beach Route. Powered by Windstream’s Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON), which provides open and disaggregated networking infrastructure, enabling wholesale and enterprise technology customers to select unique custom routes and maintain operational insights with Windstream’s Network Intelligence functions, the Beach Route offers Wave and Spectrum services up to 400G.
