American Fiber Systems Connects Groundbreaking Vanderbilt Medical Center

Written on Thursday, November 06, 2008 by Joy Milkowski
NEF Partner, American Fiber Systems, today announced its involvement with Vanderbilt Medical Center's new state-of-the-art medical mall. The leader in metropolitan fiber optical networking infrastructure, dark fiber and transport services will be connecting the university campus to the new medical locations and remote data center.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. and Nashville, Tenn. – November 6, 2008 – Optical fiber network provider American Fiber Systems (AFS) and Vanderbilt Medical Center today announced a new project to connect the university to One Hundred Oaks mall, the planned site of Vanderbilt’s new 440,000 square foot, state-of-the-art medical mall. Twenty-one Vanderbilt Medical Center clinics, including pediatrics, neurology and oncology, will rely on the AFS fiber optic network for the secure and safe transfer of high-definition X-rays, real-time records and other mission critical data.

The network solution is specifically designed to accommodate Vanderbilt’s consistent annual growth and connects the university campus to both the new medical center location and a remote data center location to be used for storage and back-up. This expansion ensures redundant coverage for traffic between the three locations and increases network survivability to further protect the $64 million medical center investment.

“What Vanderbilt is doing with One Hundred Oaks mall is groundbreaking,” said Jeff Williams, Vice President of Enterprise Sales for AFS . “Nashville has grown accustomed to relying on Vanderbilt’s expertise whenever they have a sick family member–and we are honored that Vanderbilt, in turn, depends on the reliability of the AFS team and our network to make sure the clinic’s data services run without disruption.”

For more than five years, the Vanderbilt University campus has connected to over 56 miles of the AFS fiber network in Nashville, supporting IT and data center functionality. The AFS network provides the institution with cutting-edge communications capabilities and connection speeds, keeping Vanderbilt at the forefront of technology in advanced learning.

“Vanderbilt is driven to set new standards for research, education and patient care and the network infrastructure is one of the underlying technologies enabling these possibilities. Our goal then is to partner and align ourselves with technologies and services that are highly available yet flexible to meet the growth and evolving demands of the institution.” said David Cochran, Network Services Manager, Vanderbilt University.

Recently named #21 in Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 telecommunications companies, American Fiber Systems provides metropolitan networking infrastructure, dark fiber and transport services to carriers and large and mid-sized enterprises in ten markets nationwide. For more information on partnering with AFS, visit www.americanfibersystems.com.

The Quest for Low Latency Above and Beyond the Financial Markets

Written today at 02:18PM by Joy Milkowski
It has come to pass that high latency can be a business’s kiss of death.  Seriously, if your business relies on getting data faster than your competitors, the extra milliseconds it takes to deliver content can constitute an unacceptable degradation in service quality. For example, consumers expect telephone conversations to have pin drop signal clarity without echoes, delays and other types of distortion. If you are a phone company suffering from such occurrences, you are bound to be swept away by the competition.

This being said, there is plenty of reason to get excited over the advances in low latency. To date, it is estimated that $100 million per year has been spent on improving latency performance. And while it is traditionally assumed that advances in low latency will help the banking industry specifically, a number of new factors are combining to make improved latency important to a wider world of corporate IT and mainstream technology vendors.

Financially-based message acceleration, multicore processors, solid-state disk storage, real-time business intelligence and analytics have always been part of the quest for low-latency. But with low latency growing, there becomes room for new participants outside of the financial industry. New advances are affecting any vendor with real-time aspirations, those who deal with high workloads and those who are involved in Web-scale computing. Such vendors include post-relational database companies, middleware and messaging vendors, storage and network equipment suppliers, infrastructure management companies, and even software tool and development companies.

Through compliance, deregulation and automated trading of market data, multicore processors and a host of other elements, the financial industry has inadvertently created an emergence of low latency in a host of new industries. It has become clear that the continued quest for low latency will not only shape the banking landscape, but will have significant implications for other markets and the vendors that supply them.

Keep your applications running fast and keep your costs low. Contact NEF to learn how we can help you find a robust and reliable network that fits your needs. Whether it is a dark fiber network or lit service solutions, we’ll help you find the best price on the right connectivity options for your business.

Why Virtualize? NEF Explains the Advantages of Virtualization

Written today at 11:40AM by Joy Milkowski
In our current energy crunch and poor economy, our data centers are taking a major hit. According to the Alliance to Save Energy, data centers consume 15 times more energy per square foot than a typical office or as much energy as the state of Utah alone! While IT managers are strapped to find ways to save energy and increase their ROI, there is some good news. Thanks to innovative software technology and the fundamentally changing ways people are computing, the IT landscape is rapidly transforming. Virtualized software, which got its start on mainframes decades ago, allowing administrators to avoid wasting expensive processing power, is making it easier than ever for IT manager to accomplish their energy and cost saving goals.

Virtualization is a hot topic right now, as it should be. Its concept is simple. Rather than relying on individual servers and operating systems, virtualized systems use software to allow a piece of hardware to run multiple operating system images at the same time – saving time, energy and money.  The basic theory is that virtualization lets one computer do the job of multiple computers by sharing the resources of a single computer across multiple environments.  Key elements to making this work are virtual servers and virtual desktops.

Virtual servers and virtual desktops allow for virtual hosting, a method that servers use to host more than one domain name on the same computer, sometimes on the same IP address, locally and in remote locations. The energy and cost saving advantages here are that you are freed from physical and geographical limitations. Not only do you save in energy and operating costs, you get a higher availability of resources, better desktop management, increased security and improved disaster recovery and business continuity.

It’s true that everyone is getting on the virtualization bandwagon – it’s silly not to. With the advantage of reducing IT costs and increasing efficiency, Virtualization is here to stay.

Still not convinced? Following are six reasons to virtualize.

  1. Reduction in carbon emissions – This is a no brainer. Do your part to help the environment. Not only will it save money, it will also make you feel good.
  2. Hardware replacement savings – With physical servers, hardware will need to be replaced approximately every three years. Virtual servers never wear out saving you money and the need to rebuild.
  3. Increased flexibility – Server virtualization allows you to stand up a virtual server quickly so you can deploy new applications rapidly. Additionally, instead of needing one physical server for test and another for production, the same physical server can house multiple workload types and functions.
  4. Better availability – Previously, having backup servers was a very expensive but necessary solution. With virtual servers, images can all share several backup boxes. If hardware fails, virtual images can be automatically provisioned to another box.
  5. Less total cost of ownership – For a virtual server environment, your initial investment is less because you don't need as many servers.
  6. Redirecting unspent capital – Along with reduced capital investment comes the ability to more strategically allocate your saved dollars. You can use those dollars somewhere else that will have a larger impact on your business's bottom line such as building out an application that increases margins or improves productivity.
